The inspiration for the "witness prism"
In September 2015, I was blessed to spend ten days with my two sisters in Paris and the Normandy beach area in France . We laughed a lot and walked miles enjoying the sights and sounds, the beauty of historic cathedrals and viewing world famous art in a variety of museums. The people we encountered were kind and helpful. When people gave us directions they would conclude by saying, "It's easy!". Within a stones throw we would be confused and lost. Then we decided where better to be lost than in "Paris" |
Then I had the joy of going on to Barcelona, Granada and Madrid Span spending nine days with our daughter Amy, a physician from Tampa, who made all the traveling possible. Once again I was amazed with the architecture, the art and the culture. Early in the morning a couple days before we were to leave Madrid, I awoke and lay quietly reflecting on all that I had seen and experienced. Slowly thoughts and ideas came, one of which was the image of the triangles representing the trinity in the Christian art. This collided with my intrigue with modern art and the "Witness Prism" emerged. Several times over the next weeks I would awaken in the early morning with my mind flooded with more exciting thoughts and associations around the unfolding of the design and elements. I went to buy outdoor Christmas decorations year, only to discover there were NO CHRISTIAN DECORATIONS to be found for sale. That is when the idea of the "Christmas Witness Tree" came to mind and I proceeded to build one right away! (see Christmas Witness Tree page) In February 2016, when my college friend from Grand Rapids, Michigan visited us, he suggested that I enter my piece in Artprize Eight. Artprise is "a radically open international art competition decided by public vote and expert jury that takes place each fall in Grand Rapids-and it's all free and open to the public". I did and it was accepted in the 3-D category. The piece was renamed "ONENESS" because it is a visual representation of the oneness revealed in Deuteronomy 6:4,5 and John 17:20-23. (go to www.artprize.org to see the entries ) The Witness Prism Puzzle is an abbreviated version of "Oneness" and can be used as a witnessing and teaching tool. Amazingly, this 3D puzzle has been produced by 3D printing! (see Witness Prism Puzzle page) I had been praying for something meaningful and inspiring to do in my retirement and THIS IS IT! My prayer is that the witness prism will be a valuable witness aid to help believers be faithful to Jesus' call to witness to all the hurting world. |
